Tacoma Public Library cards must be renewed periodically. Renewals occur at intervals set by the type of card issued. Why? This protects our patrons from the potential misuse of their card if it is lost or stolen. It also insures that our records are accurate and up-to-date.

Before a patron may re-register his/her address and identification must be verified, and all fines outstanding on the library card must be paid.

  1. A patron must present his/her library card at the time of re-registration. If the card has been lost or stolen the patron must purchase a new library card. (A one-time courtesy override may be given to a patron who has forgotten to bring their library card. The card is not renewed, but the patron is allowed to check out at this time. The card must be renewed at the next visit.)
  2. The patron must pay his/her outstanding fines before his/her library card may be renewed. (A one-time courtesy override may be given to a patron when, in the judgement of the staff member, the fine is not large and when patron states they will pay the fine at the next visit. The card is not renewed, but the patron is allowed to check out at this time. The fines must be paid and the card renewed before the patron may check out any further items.)
  3. Once all fines are paid the patron will be asked to recite his/her name, home address, and telephone number. He/she may also be asked to recite his/her date of birth and/or school and grade, when applicable.
  4. Identification is not required when the patron is able to recite the required information (full name, home address, and telephone number) from the patron record. If the patron is unable to recite the information then he/she must present current, acceptable, photo identification.
