The Tacoma Public Library's StoryLab is offering a series of free workshop this fall especially for teens. These workshop explore voice -over acting, digital photography skills, the spoken word in performance and what it takes create and market your own brand (whether you are a musician, visual artist, poet or performer).  Unless otherwise noted, all workshops are held at the downtown Main Library at 1102 Tacoma Avenue South.

Workshop attendance is kept small to ensure personalized instruction and advance registration is required. Register online or by telephoning the library at 253.292.2001. These workshops are funded through a grant from the Paul G. Allen Foundation.

Create poems and perform them with power, confidence and certainty. Create original content that changes the air currents and shakes up listeners. Make a poem that packs a wallop. Join Tacoma's new poet Laureate Lucas Smiraldo in a writing and spoken word workshop designed to move your message from the paper to the microphone to digital media, all in one day. Explore your writing voice and performance identity. Folks who take this workshop will come away with the ability to:

  • Write original works of poetry with full of life and absent of stereotypes
  • Revise your works into lean pieces of spoken word
  • Prepare performance for recording that will move new listeners and viewers
  • Develop finished audio works that can be partnered with various forms of digital media
  • Find renewed pride and power in their emerging voices

The presenter: Lucas Smiraldo is Tacoma's Poet Laureate and a multi genre generative artist. His recent works include a 17 track CD titled Voice of the Americas which was coupled with an original score from sound artist Wrick Wolff and a series of short films titled "Slam Town". Luke will publish two works of poetry including the book "Practice" which will be coupled with original black and white works from a local photographer. Luke has performed commissions for the Tacoma Art Museum, The Museum of Glass, The Black Pilots Association, Seattle Mayor's Hip Hop Awards, Hempfest and many others. Voice Over Workshop with Nicole Fazio

In this day-long Voice-Over workshop, we will take a step-by-step approach working as a voice-over artist - from working with a microphone to the business side of being a successful voice over artist. You will learn to read and interpret various types of text, using your individual voice. You will learn the basics of staying focused and able to perform under the pressure of a recording session, including diction and relaxation exercises, and ways of quickly and effectively interpreting copy, as well as taking direction. You will have an opportunity to explore radio and television ad copy, technical narration, and character work such as video games. You will cover what to expect in a recording session, from auditions to bookings. You will have the opportunity to rehearse and record your own work.

Award Winning Voice Over Actor, Nicole Fazio's career break came recording Hyundai Motor Company's National Television Campaigns; announcing the Accent, Elantra, Sonata & Tiberon vehicles launched her as the future of Voice Overs becoming one of the first and only women to brand a car. Ms. Fazio was hand selected as announcer of #1 Jordan Whitney Charts & Telly Winner, Bare Escentuals, "makeup so pure you can sleep in it," creating an industry prototype as the Voice of Beauty. National announcer of XO Communications Campaign, current announcer of National WEN by Chaz Dean Campaigns (Official Hair Care of Miss America 2012 on ABC) & Natural Advantage Campaign both for industry leader, Guthy-Renker garnering numerous Clio & Telly Awards for advertising in television commercials.
