How do I access information when I can’t get to the library?

Even if you can't get to the Tacoma Public Library, there are many ways to access information, research assistance or to simply get an answer to a question, including telephone assistance, email and regular mail.  Information is available online twenty-four hours per day through the Library’s catalog (including patron account information) and through a large number of commercial and local databases.  Here are some of your options to access information when you cannot get to the library.

  • The Library’s online catalog.  
    The Library’s online catalog is an excellent resource for books and other library materials.  It can be accessed twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, three hundred sixty-five days a year.  For patrons with Tacoma Public Library cards, library account information is also available.  Patron can place their own reserves online, renew their library materials and view other account information.
  • Online Databases available on the Library's web site. 
    The Tacoma Public Library provides access to a vast array of subscription or commercial databases along with numerous library-developed databases providing a wealth of information to individuals who cannot visit our physical locations.  Our subscription databases can be utilized to locate addresses and telephone numbers, assist in term paper research, review company and business information, research ancestry, repair electronic equipment and automobiles, evaluate career opportunities, and assist with readers’ advisory.

    Our library-developed databases provide local information in such areas as Tacoma buildings, Tacoma obituaries, Washington place names, Pacific Northwest ships and shipping, fascinating people and unsettling events.
  • WebReference
    WebReference is the Tacoma Public Library’s on-line information service for general reference questions.  This is another way to ask questions and receive answers from the Library’s reference staff.  Each email question, as with all reference questions, will be treated with the strictest confidence.  Anyone, anywhere can utilize this service.  WebReference is designed for specific questions with brief, factual answers.  For answers to more complex questions or research assistance, please visit the Tacoma Public Library’s Main Library.  Reference staff will do their best to respond to each WebReference question within twenty-four hours (one business day excluding weekends and holidays).
  • NW-WebReference
    NW-WebReference is the Tacoma Public Library's on-line information service for Tacoma and Northwest-related questions. This is another way to ask questions and receive answers from the staff of the Library's Northwest Room and Special Collections. Each email question, as with all reference questions, will be treated with the strictest confidence.  As with WebReference, anyone, anywhere can utilize this service and it is also designed for specific questions with brief, factual answers.  For answers to more complex questions or research assistance on a Tacoma or Northwest-related topic, please visit the Northwest Room in the Tacoma Public Library’s Main Library.  The staff of the Northwest Room will do their best to respond to each question within twenty-four hours (one business day excluding weekends and holidays).
