How Do I Reserve a book?

There are several ways to reserve Tacoma Public Library materials.

  • During their regular hours of operation, the staff of Telephone Refence is available to assist you in reserving library materials over the telephone. Simply call 253-292-2001 and tell the staff member that you want to reserve an item. To reserve library materials over the telephone, you will need to provide your Tacoma Public Library card number, so please have your card number ready. The number is located on the back of your library card, directly below the bar code and starts with the letter, ‘P’.
  • The reservation of library materials is also available twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week through the Library’s online catalog. To access your library account or reserve materials, you will need your Tacoma Public Library card number and your ‘PIN’ number. Your library card number must be entered in the Library Card Number Box exactly as it appears on your library card, using the ‘P’ and any leading zeros. On library card number P0001234, the complete card number, ‘P0001234’ must be entered. Unless, you have personally changed your ‘PIN’ number, the ‘PIN’ number will be the last four digits of your telephone number. On the telephone number, 123-456-7890, the ‘PIN’ number is ‘7890’.
  • Reserves on Library materials may also be made in person at any location of the Tacoma Public Library. You are welcome to use any of the Library’s online catalog stations to directly locate the item or items you are interested in placing on reserve or simply ask a staff member to assist you with the process. As indicated above, you will need your exact library card number and ‘PIN’ number for using the online catalog. To complete the reserve process, either over the telephone, in person, or online, a pick-up location must be designated for each item that is placed on reserve. If the pick-up location is not changed, the location to pick-up your reserve item, once it becomes available for check-out, will default to the Main Library.
